The Mahabharata is a dramatic, lyrical, sexy, magical and deeply spiritual Indian epic tale. Its subjects are pride, self-realization and the rise and fall of ignorance and wisdom in human lives and history.
Join Shambhavi live in PDX on August 23rd for the latest installment in the weekly, year-long exploration of this timeless story which contains within it the world’s greatest exposition on human doubt and the getting of wisdom: the Bhagavad Gita.
What’s it all About?
The Mahabharata is tale of a single extended family, split into two: darkness and light. Yet neither side is purely one thing or another. It details the loss of a kingdom, exile, a great war and the slow, back and forth journey toward our true home and the understanding of the nature of the Self.
More than anything else, the Mahabharata is a tale of dharma and yoga. It is a story that purifies, that teaches us persistance, courage and respect for time. It schools us in the myriad ways in which human life inevitably leads to wisdom, no matter how many times ignorance seems to prevail.
“No story, no teaching is more appropriate for the current situation of our world. Together on the field of dharma, we are confronting the ragings of our own darkness just as so many are opening to greater wisdom.” ~ Shambhavi Sarasvati
How is the teaching structured?
The entire series will be a combination of reading and free-wheeling discussion. The emphasis will be on the spiritual significance of the text and how we can apply it to our lives now.
The two texts are:
Abhinavagupta’s Commentary on the Bhagavad Gita by Abhinavagupta, transl. Boris Marjanovic (Available on Amazon)
