The Essence of Trika Shaivism and Dzogchen is a three-part teaching on the histories, views, and core approaches of these two kindred direct realization traditions.
In part three, Abhinavagupta’s Fifteen Verses on Awakening, we explore the entire breadth of the View of Trika Shaivism in fifteen pithy statements that are both an explication and a transmission.
What this teaching is about
The Fifteen Verses on Awakening (The Bodhapañcadaśikā ) by Abhinavagupta conveys the nature of the Self a.k.a. reality in fifteen short statements. An alternate translation of the title that conveys the power of these statements might be: Fifteen Awakening Verses.
Abhinavagupta had a wry and sly sense of humor. In addition to some exceedingly long treatises, he also wrote shorter teachings, in this case with the caveat that the teaching is for less intellectual students.
Some pandits have interpreted this to mean less capable students, but the Siddha lets us know that he intended these teachings for students whose intellect was not blocking direct understanding and who were dear to him because of their devotion.
“I, Abhinavagupta, have composed these fifteen verses for my heart-opened students who have little regard for pedantic teaching in order to trigger their immediate awakening.” ~from the Bodhapañcadaśikā
