An eight-session teaching cycle with Shambhavi Sarasvati
Ayurveda, “the science of life,” is a system of health cultivation developed in India over ten thousand years ago. In this teaching, Shambhavi shares practical ways in which everyone can learn to support their health, quality of life, and spiritual practice with Ayurveda.
Ayurvedic self-care is the foundation of our practice at Jaya Kula. With a working understanding of Ayurveda applied to our everyday lives, students can have a richer experience of other practices such as hatha yoga, mantra, and kriya yoga.
Ayurveda helps us to balance the five elements in our bodies, energy, and minds. It supports us to live in harmony with the natural world and remain healthier, calmer, and less conflicted.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
April 2: An introduction to the history and basic principles of Ayurveda. Includes an exploration of self-care as the heart of the tradition. Why Ayurvedic self-care is a spiritual practice.
April 16: The five elements and dosha: vata, pitta, and kapha
May 7: Balancing dosha
May 21: Self-observation — The foundation of Ayurvedic self-care: You will learn specific aspects of self-observation: the emotions, dreams, tongue, urine, fingernails, and so on that are crucial for skillfully surfing life’s changing conditions.
Jun 4: Dinacharya — Going deeper. Many Jaya Kula students practice Dinacharya. In this teaching, we will go deeper and discuss how to adjust it for each dosha and changing circumstances
Jun 18: Prana, tejas, and ojas
July 16: Disease, Dis-ease, and Ease: You will learn about the disease process and the movement toward greater ease and dying well.
Aug 6: Kitchen Medicine — Common herbs for self-care: You will learn how to use common Ayurvedic herbs found in your kitchen and in health food stores.
Ayurveda for You is offered on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 9:30am – noon. There is one exception to this schedule — there will be only one teaching in July.
Ayurveda is a wisdom tradition. As with all wisdom traditions, understanding of Ayurveda is incremental and cumulative. Each teaching is required to understand the subsequent teachings.
Students must make a commitment to study outside of class and, in some cases, memorize key concepts and components of the teachings. This is the only way that the teachings will become useful for you!

About the Teacher
Shambhavi has studied Ayurveda for the past 25 years. She was trained by teachers and practitioners from the Ayurvedic Institute and the California College of Ayurveda. She had a clinical practice before her other teaching duties took precedence.
Shambhavi is the spiritual director of Jaya Kula. She emphasizes the more explicitly devotional teachings and practices of Trika Shaivism and Dzogchen and direct knowing through encounters with the wisdom of the heart. She is also known for making complex teachings about the nature of the self and reality understandable, practical, and always relatable to everyday experience. Her teachings are grounded in her more than thirty-five years of daily personal practice and personal retreats.
