With Shambhavi Sarasvati

Trika Shaivism and Dzogchen share many essential aspects of View and practice. Shambhavi offers a foundational teaching in the Three Words that Strike the Heart of Garab Dorje and their equivalents in Trika Shaivism.

Garab Dorje was a 7th century, North Indian Dzogchen practitioner and siddha. He spent much of his life living in a cremation ground on the outskirts of Bodhgaya. Garab Dorje’s teachings have come down to us as three words, sometimes expanded to three pithy statements, that convey the essence of Dzogchen View, practice, and fruit.

From the 5th to the 12th centuries, Trika Shaivism was slowly coalescing into the tradition we have received. For both historical, geographic, and esoteric reasons, Trika Shaivism and Dzogchen share similar, and in some cases identical, approaches and views.

Each of Garab Dorje’s three words has an equivalent in Trika. The teachings on the three words help us to understand the essence of direct realization practice, the method by which we can realize, and what is understood as the goal of practice. They also describe the progression of practice as we move from the barest glimmer of direct realization to its full flower.
